How the firefighter shift schedule calculator works

Firefighter schedules vary by department, but most rotations follow a repeatable pattern of ON duty days and OFF days. This tool generates a clear calendar for common rotations like 24/48, 48/96, and a common Kelly-style cycle—plus a custom pattern option.

1) Pick a preset (or enter a custom pattern)

  • 24/48: one 24-hour shift followed by 48 hours off.
  • 48/96: two 24-hour shifts back-to-back, then 96 hours off.
  • Kelly-style: many departments use a variation—always verify with your agency.
  • Custom: enter a comma-separated ON/OFF day pattern (example: 1,2 or 1,2,1,2,1,4).

2) Choose your start date (ON duty)

  • Select the date of your next ON duty shift.
  • Pick how far ahead you want the calendar: 30, 60, 90, or 180 days.
  • Use the Platoon selector to label your output (A/B/C).

3) Read the calendar output

  • ON DUTY days show your duty block (example: “Day 1/2”).
  • OFF days show your time off between shifts.
  • The summary totals estimate on-duty days, off-duty days, and total duty hours in the selected range.

Important notes

  • Schedules can vary by department policy, staffing, trade days, and overtime.
  • Kelly schedules are not universal—use this as a planning tool and confirm against your official schedule.
  • This calculator is informational only. Always follow your department SOPs.
