A facepiece fit check is a quick, user-performed test to ensure the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) facepiece forms an airtight seal on the firefighter's face before entering a hazardous environment. This check typically involves covering the regulator or inhalation valve and inhaling slightly to detect any leaks. Not to be confused with a formal facepiece fit test, which is a comprehensive, certified procedure conducted periodically to determine proper facepiece size and fit. Fit checks are critical during initial donning and throughout operations involving SCBA use under Incident Command System (ICS) protocols.
