Definition & Operational Usage

Burnout refers to a chronic state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion resulting from prolonged exposure to high-stress environments, particularly common among emergency responders. This condition can manifest as diminished job performance, increased absenteeism, and a heightened risk of psychological disorders. Not to be confused with acute fatigue, which may resolve with rest, burnout necessitates comprehensive recovery strategies and support systems, especially within structured frameworks like ICS or NIMS. In EMS contexts, it is commonly framed alongside structured communication and triage concepts such as START (Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment) or SALT (Sort, Assess, Lifesaving interventions, Treatment/Transport) as shared terminology.
