Definition & Operational Usage

Medical Direction refers to the oversight and guidance provided by a licensed physician to EMS personnel regarding patient care protocols, treatment decisions, and quality assurance measures. This direction can be categorized as direct (online) or indirect (offline), depending on the immediacy of the physician's involvement. Not to be confused with clinical supervision, Medical Direction is essential for maintaining adherence to established protocols within the Incident Command System (ICS) framework, ensuring effective patient management during emergencies.
