Definition & Operational Usage

Trauma assessment is a structured evaluation process for patients with injuries, emphasizing the identification of life-threatening conditions and the prioritization of medical interventions. This assessment involves a primary survey to address immediate threats to life, followed by a secondary survey for a thorough examination of injuries. Not to be confused with routine patient assessments, trauma assessments are critical in high-stress environments, such as during incidents managed under the Incident Command System (ICS). In EMS contexts, it is commonly framed alongside structured communication and triage concepts such as START (Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment) or SALT (Sort, Assess, Lifesaving interventions, Treatment/Transport) as shared terminology.
