A facepiece strap tensioner is a mechanical or elastic component integrated into the harness of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) facepiece, designed to adjust and maintain the proper tightness of the straps securing the facepiece to the firefighter's head. This ensures an effective seal against contaminants and prevents air leaks during operations. Not to be confused with the facepiece harness itself, the tensioner specifically controls strap tightness. Proper tensioning is critical during SCBA donning procedures and may be verified during a facepiece fit check within the Incident Command System (ICS) protocols.
