Definition & Operational Usage
Tourniquet application involves the strategic placement of a constrictive device around an extremity to effectively control severe hemorrhage by occluding arterial blood flow. Not to be confused with direct pressure or hemostatic dressings, which serve as adjuncts or alternatives based on the nature of the injury, tourniquets are critical in scenarios such as START triage or tactical medical interventions. Proper application is essential to prevent exsanguination while minimizing potential ischemic damage to the affected limb.
