Definition & Operational Usage

Fireground size-up is the critical initial evaluation performed by the incident commander upon arrival at an emergency scene. This assessment encompasses the identification of the fire's location, intensity, potential hazards, and the structural integrity of the building, all of which inform tactical decisions and resource allocation. Not to be confused with post-incident analysis, size-up is conducted in real-time and is essential for establishing an effective Incident Command System (ICS) and ensuring responder safety within designated Hot, Warm, and Cold Zones.
