Definition & Operational Usage

Overhaul refers to the systematic process of thoroughly inspecting and extinguishing any remaining hot spots or embers after the primary fire suppression efforts have been completed. This phase is crucial for ensuring complete extinguishment and preventing rekindling, often involving the movement of debris, examination of concealed spaces, and the use of thermal imaging cameras (TIC) to detect residual heat. Not to be confused with salvage operations, overhaul is a distinct phase that focuses on fire suppression and safety. It typically occurs within the context of the Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS).
