Definition & Operational Usage of Rapid Intervention Crew Pack
What Is Rapid Intervention Crew Pack?
A Rapid Intervention Crew Pack (RIC Pack) is a specialized set of equipment carried by firefighters to facilitate the immediate rescue of a downed or trapped firefighter during emergency operations. It typically includes a spare SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) cylinder, a high-pressure hose, and a facepiece, allowing rescuers to provide air supply and extraction support. Not to be confused with a standard SCBA pack, the RIC Pack is specifically designed for rapid deployment within the Incident Command System (ICS) framework during MAYDAY situations.
Why Rapid Intervention Crew Pack Matters on the Fireground
The RIC Pack is critical for firefighter safety, enabling rapid air supply and rescue efforts in hazardous environments where a firefighter may become incapacitated. Its presence enhances the effectiveness of Rapid Intervention Teams (RIT) and supports personnel accountability reports (PAR) by providing immediate life-saving resources on the fireground. Proper use of RIC Packs can reduce fatalities and improve survival outcomes in emergency rescues.
