Definition & Operational Usage

Fireground situational awareness encompasses the ability of firefighting personnel to accurately perceive, interpret, and anticipate the dynamic elements of the operational environment during an incident. This includes assessing fire behavior, identifying potential hazards, and monitoring the status of resources and personnel, particularly within the context of established frameworks such as the Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS). Not to be confused with general situational awareness, it specifically addresses the unique and rapidly changing conditions encountered at a fire scene.
