Definition & Operational Usage of Air Mask Buddy System
What Is Air Mask Buddy System?
The Air Mask Buddy System is a safety protocol in which two firefighters operating in hazardous atmospheres using SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) continuously monitor each other's air supply and equipment integrity. This system enhances situational awareness and ensures rapid assistance in case of equipment failure or emergency. Not to be confused with the PASS (personal alert safety system) device, which alerts others when a firefighter is motionless, the Air Mask Buddy System relies on direct human oversight during operations within the Hot Zone.
Why Air Mask Buddy System Matters on the Fireground
Implementing the Air Mask Buddy System reduces the risk of unnoticed SCBA malfunctions and improves firefighter survival during interior attacks or confined space rescues. It supports accountability and rapid intervention, aligning with ICS (incident command system) and RIT/RIC (rapid intervention team/crew) safety protocols.
