UN 1036 — Ethylamine
Placard: Flammable Gas. ERG Guide 118. Training/quick-reference only — use current ERG + SOP/SOG for incident-specific actions.
Ethylamine is a colorless gas or liquid with a strong ammonia-like, fishy odor, shipped as a liquefied compressed gas. It is extremely flammable and may be ignited by heat, sparks or flames.
Hazard overview: Ethylamine is extremely flammable and may be ignited by heat, sparks or flames, posing a significant fire hazard. The gas can also cause severe skin and eye irritation, and respiratory problems.
Response guidance: In case of an ethylamine leak, evacuate the area immediately and use alcohol-resistant foam, CO2, or dry chemical to extinguish the fire. Emergency responders should wear Level B minimum protective clothing, including SCBA, and chemical-resistant clothing to prevent skin and eye contact.
UN 1036 Quick Details
Common Hazards of UN 1036
- EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE.
- May be ignited by heat, sparks or flames.
- May form explosive mixtures with air.
- Vapors from liquefied gas are initially heavier than air and spread along ground.
- Vapors may travel to source of ignition and flash back.
- Some of these materials may react violently with water.
- Cylinders exposed to fire may vent and release flammable gas through pressure relief devices.
- Containers may explode when heated.

Isolation & Evacuation
First Actions for a UN 1036 Incident
- Keep unauthorized personnel away.
- Stay upwind, uphill and/or upstream.
- Ventilate closed spaces before entering, but only if properly trained and equipped.
- Isolate spill or leak area for at least 100 meters (330 feet) in all directions.
- For highlighted materials: see Table 1 - Initial Isolation and Protective Action Distances.
- For non-highlighted materials: increase the immediate precautionary measure distance, in the downwind
