Definition & Operational Usage
The facepiece seal is the flexible, airtight gasket on a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) facepiece that ensures a secure fit against the firefighter's face, preventing contaminated air from entering the breathing zone. Not to be confused with the facepiece lens or regulator, the seal is critical for maintaining respiratory protection in hazardous environments. Proper fit and integrity of the facepiece seal are essential during operations involving hazardous atmospheres, such as within the Hot Zone or during Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) deployments.
