Definition & Operational Usage
The facepiece speaking diaphragm is a flexible, acoustically transparent membrane integrated into the facepiece of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). It enables clear voice transmission by allowing sound waves to pass through while maintaining the integrity of the respiratory seal. Not to be confused with the facepiece exhalation valve, this diaphragm is essential for effective communication during fireground operations, including incident command system (ICS) coordination and rapid intervention team (RIT) activities.
