UN 0289 — Cord, detonating, metal clad
Placard: Explosive 1.4D. ERG Guide 114. Training/quick-reference only — use current ERG + SOP/SOG for incident-specific actions.
UN 0289, Cord detonating metal clad (commonly known as det cord), is a flexible high-explosive product consisting of a PETN core encased in copper or aluminum sheathing used to initiate other explosives in sequence. Despite its 1.4D classification indicating limited mass explosion risk, improper handling or exposure to heat and flame can result in deflagration, localized blast, and toxic smoke.
Hazard overview: UN 0289 presents a minor but real blast and fire hazard; localized burning or deflagration can occur if the cord is ignited, producing heat and smoke without necessarily detonating the entire length. In large quantities or when confined, the hazard escalates significantly and the material should be treated as a potential mass explosion risk.
Response guidance: Per ERG Guide 114, establish an immediate isolation zone of 100 meters in all directions and evacuate a minimum 800-meter radius if fire or detonation is suspected. Do not attempt to move or cut burning cord; use water spray to cool surrounding materials from a safe distance without directing water impact onto the product itself.
