UN 1506 — Strontium chlorate
Placard: Oxidizer. ERG Guide 143. Training/quick-reference only — use current ERG + SOP/SOG for incident-specific actions.
Strontium chlorate is a white to yellowish crystalline powder or granules that is odorless and solid at room temperature. It is highly reactive and can explode from friction, heat, or contamination.
Hazard overview: Strontium chlorate may explode from friction, heat, or contamination, and will accelerate burning when involved in a fire. It can also create an oxidizing solution when dissolved in water.
Response guidance: In the event of a spill, isolate the area 25m in all directions, and use water spray or dry sand to extinguish fires. Avoid organic materials and reducing agents, and consider evacuation if a large spill or fire occurs.

Common Hazards of UN 1506
- May explode from friction, heat or contamination.
- These substances will accelerate burning when involved in a fire.
- May ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.).
- Some will react explosively with hydrocarbons (fuels).
- Containers may explode when heated.
- Runoff may create fire or explosion hazard.
- TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or contact (skin, eyes) with vapors, dusts or substance may cause severe
- Fire may produce irritating and/or toxic gases.

Isolation & Evacuation
First Actions for a UN 1506 Incident
- Keep unauthorized personnel away.
- Stay upwind, uphill and/or upstream.
- Ventilate closed spaces before entering, but only if properly trained and equipped.
- Isolate spill or leak area in all directions for at least 50 meters (150 feet) for liquids and at least 25 meters
- For highlighted materials: see Table 1 - Initial Isolation and Protective Action Distances.
- For non-highlighted materials: increase the immediate precautionary measure distance, in the downwind
