UN 0328 — Cartridges for weapons, inert projectile
Placard: Explosive 1.2C. ERG Guide 112. Training/quick-reference only — use current ERG + SOP/SOG for incident-specific actions.
UN 0328 identifies metallic ammunition cartridges containing a live propellant charge fitted with inert, non-explosive projectiles, classified as Division 1.2C explosives. Despite the non-explosive projectile, the propellant charge poses a serious fragmentation and blast overpressure hazard upon initiation.
Hazard overview: Initiation by heat, shock, or electrical current can propel inert projectiles and cartridge fragments at lethal velocities while generating blast overpressure in the immediate area. Sensitivity to external stimuli makes fire involvement especially dangerous, as mass cookoff of multiple cartridges is possible.
Response guidance: Evacuate all personnel to a minimum of 500 meters in all directions, extending to 1,600 meters if fire or explosion is active or imminent. Do not attempt to fight fire directly; withdraw and allow burning to proceed under monitoring using unmanned hose holders only if resources permit safe standoff distance.

Common Hazards of UN 0328
- Projection and fragmentation hazard on initiation.
- Blast overpressure in immediate area.
- Sensitive to heat, shock, or electrical current.
- May initiate other explosives in proximity.
Chemical Identity & Physical Properties
UN 0328 cartridges are metallic cylindrical assemblies—typically brass or steel cased—containing a solid propellant charge and an inert projectile, produced in various calibers and configurations.

PPE Requirements
Minimum Level B protection with full structural firefighting gear and SCBA is required, though complete withdrawal is strongly recommended given the fragmentation and explosion hazard.
Isolation & Evacuation
First Actions for a UN 0328 Incident
- CALL 911. Then call emergency response telephone number on shipping paper.
- Isolate minimum 500 meters; stage upwind and uphill.
- Request Hazmat + law enforcement immediately.
- Control ignition sources; deny unauthorized entry.
- Do not approach — projectile/fragmentation hazard.
- Consult current ERG Guide 112 and follow SOP/SOG.
