Definition & Operational Usage

A pressure demand regulator is a critical component of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) that activates to deliver air to the user only when a slight negative pressure is detected within the facepiece during inhalation. Not to be confused with a positive pressure regulator, which maintains a constant positive pressure, the pressure demand regulator optimizes air consumption by supplying air only as required throughout the breathing cycle. This functionality is essential in high-stress environments, such as during firefighting operations in Hot Zones, where air conservation is paramount.
