UN 1758 — Chromium oxychloride
Placard: Corrosive. ERG Guide 137. Training/quick-reference only — use current ERG + SOP/SOG for incident-specific actions.
Chromium oxychloride is a highly corrosive and toxic substance that can cause severe injury upon contact with skin, eyes, or inhalation. It is essential to handle this substance with extreme caution.
Hazard overview: Inhalation, ingestion, or contact with vapors, dusts, or chromium oxychloride may cause severe injury. Fire will produce irritating, corrosive, and/or toxic gases.
Response guidance: In case of emergency, evacuate the area and call the local emergency number. Use dry chemical, CO2, or sand for fire extinguishing, and avoid using water or foam due to violent reactivity.
UN 1758 Quick Details
Common Hazards of UN 1758
- CORROSIVE and/or TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or contact (skin, eyes) with vapors, dusts or substance
- Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.
- Reaction with water may generate much heat that will increase the concentration of fumes in the air.
- Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes.
- Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause environmental contamination.
- EXCEPT FOR ACETIC ANHYDRIDE (UN1715), THAT IS FLAMMABLE, some of these materials may
- May ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.).
- Substance will react with water (some violently), releasing corrosive and/or toxic gases and runoff.

Isolation & Evacuation
First Actions for a UN 1758 Incident
- Keep unauthorized personnel away.
- Stay upwind, uphill and/or upstream.
- Ventilate closed spaces before entering, but only if properly trained and equipped.
- Isolate spill or leak area in all directions for at least 50 meters (150 feet) for liquids and at least 25 meters
- For highlighted materials: see Table 1 - Initial Isolation and Protective Action Distances.
- For non-highlighted materials: increase the immediate precautionary measure distance, in the downwind
