UN 3429 — Chlorotoluidines, liquid
Placard: Toxic. ERG Guide 153. Training/quick-reference only — use current ERG + SOP/SOG for incident-specific actions.
UN 3429 is Chlorotoluidines, liquid, a toxic aromatic amine liquid or mixture. These materials may be absorbed through skin and can produce serious health effects after direct contact or vapor exposure.
Hazard overview: UN 3429 is toxic by inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. It may irritate or burn eyes and skin, and heating or fire can generate toxic nitrogen and chlorine-containing gases. Some formulations may burn but do not ignite readily.
Response guidance: For UN 3429, isolate the area, keep responders upwind and prevent contact with liquid or vapor. Use alcohol-resistant foam, CO2 or dry chemical for fires, cool containers from a distance and contain contaminated runoff.
UN 3429 Quick Details
Common Hazards of UN 3429
- TOXIC and/or CORROSIVE; inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with material may cause severe injury
- Methyl bromoacetate (UN2643) is an eye irritant/lachrymator (causes flow of tears).
- Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes.
- Avoid any skin contact.
- Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.
- Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause environmental
- Combustible material: may burn but does not ignite readily.
- When heated, vapors may form explosive mixtures with air: indoors, outdoors and sewers explosion
Chemical Identity & Physical Properties
UN 3429 is a liquid chlorinated toluidine material; color may range from pale to dark depending on isomers and impurities. It usually has an aromatic amine odor and vapor heavier than air.
| Also known as | chlorinated toluidineschloromethylanilinesaminochlorotolueneschloro-methylaniline isomers |
| Appearance | Liquid mixture of chlorinated toluidine isomers, typically pale yellow to amber colored with an aniline-like or aromatic amine odor. Combustible liquid at room temperature. |
| Flash Point | 113C (235F) typical range |
| Boiling Point | 230-245C (446-473F) depending on isomer |

PPE Requirements
Use SCBA with chemical-resistant suit, gloves and boots. Because skin absorption is a concern, protect all exposed skin and decontaminate clothing and tools.
Isolation & Evacuation
First Actions for a UN 3429 Incident
- Keep unauthorized personnel away.
- Stay upwind, uphill and/or upstream.
- Ventilate closed spaces before entering, but only if properly trained and equipped.
- Isolate spill or leak area in all directions for at least 50 meters (150 feet) for liquids and at least 25 meters
- For highlighted materials: see Table 1 - Initial Isolation and Protective Action Distances.
- For non-highlighted materials: increase the immediate precautionary measure distance, in the downwind
