UN 3360 — Fibers, vegetable, dry
Placard: Flammable Solid. ERG Guide 133. Training/quick-reference only — use current ERG + SOP/SOG for incident-specific actions.
Dry vegetable fibers include plant-based materials such as jute, sisal, hemp, flax or cotton-like fibers shipped dry.
Hazard overview: The material is combustible. Dust, loose fibers and tightly packed bales can ignite, smolder or rekindle after apparent extinguishment.
Response guidance: Remove ignition sources, separate exposed bales if safe and wet down burning or smoldering material. Watch for hidden fire inside compressed loads.
UN 3360 Quick Details
Common Hazards of UN 3360
- Flammable/combustible material.
- May be ignited by friction, heat, sparks or flames.
- Some may burn rapidly with flare-burning effect.
- Powders, dusts, shavings, borings, turnings or cuttings may explode or burn with explosive violence.
- Substance may be transported in a molten form at a temperature that may be above its flash point.
- May re-ignite after fire is extinguished.
- Fire may produce irritating and/or toxic gases.
- Contact may cause burns to skin and eyes.
Chemical Identity & Physical Properties

| Flash Point | Variable, typically ignites at 200-250°C (392-482°F) depending on fiber type and moisture content |
| Boiling Point | Not applicable (solid material that decomposes/burns rather than boils) |
| Vapor Density | Not applicable (solid material with no significant vapor pressure) |
| Water Reactivity | No significant reaction; water may be used to wet down and prevent ignition or suppress fire |

PPE Requirements
Use structural firefighting PPE and SCBA during fire; use respiratory protection for dusty handling conditions.
Isolation & Evacuation
First Actions for a UN 3360 Incident
- CALL 911. Then call the emergency response telephone number on the shipping paper, if available.
- Keep unauthorized personnel away.
- Stay upwind, uphill and/or upstream.
- Isolate spill or leak area for at least 25 meters (75 feet) in all directions.
- Consider initial downwind evacuation for at least 100 meters (330 feet).
