UN 3415 — Sodium fluoride, solution
Placard: Toxic. ERG Guide 154. Training/quick-reference only — use current ERG + SOP/SOG for incident-specific actions.
UN 3415 is Sodium fluoride, solution, a toxic aqueous fluoride salt solution. It is not a flammable liquid, but exposure can cause systemic fluoride poisoning and corrosive injury depending on concentration.
Hazard overview: UN 3415 may injure skin, eyes, respiratory tract or gastrointestinal system after contact, inhalation of mist or ingestion. Fluoride exposure can have serious systemic effects, and fire may produce toxic or corrosive decomposition products.
Response guidance: For UN 3415, isolate the spill area, avoid splashes or aerosols and keep liquid out of drains and waterways. Use water spray, fog or compatible agents for surrounding fires, and handle contaminated runoff as toxic. Medical evaluation is important for significant fluoride exposure.
UN 3415 Quick Details
Common Hazards of UN 3415
- TOXIC and/or CORROSIVE; inhalation, ingestion or skin contact with material may cause severe injury
- Contact with molten substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes.
- Avoid any skin contact.
- Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.
- Runoff from fire control or dilution water may be corrosive and/or toxic and cause environmental
- Non-combustible, substance itself does not burn but may decompose upon heating to produce corrosive
- Some are oxidizers and may ignite combustibles (wood, paper, oil, clothing, etc.).
- Corrosives in contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas.
Chemical Identity & Physical Properties
UN 3415 is generally a clear to slightly cloudy aqueous liquid with little odor. It is miscible with water and does not support combustion, but concentration controls the severity of toxic and corrosive effects.

PPE Requirements
Use SCBA where mist or confined-space exposure is possible, plus chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles or face shield and protective clothing. For large spills or unknown concentration, Level B protection is appropriate.
Isolation & Evacuation
First Actions for a UN 3415 Incident
- Keep unauthorized personnel away.
- Stay upwind, uphill and/or upstream.
- Ventilate closed spaces before entering, but only if properly trained and equipped.
- Isolate spill or leak area in all directions for at least 50 meters (150 feet) for liquids and at least 25 meters
- For highlighted materials: see Table 1 - Initial Isolation and Protective Action Distances.
- For non-highlighted materials: increase the immediate precautionary measure distance, in the downwind
