Indianapolis hires through a city-county career system, South Bend fixes annual fire pay by ordinance, Fort Wayne bargains through IAFF Local 124, and Hamilton/Hendricks County suburbs often advertise lateral firefighter/EMT salaries that are noticeably higher than older statewide averages.

The latest BLS-based 2025 wage data show an Indiana firefighter median of $62,780 per year. The statewide 25th percentile is $50,300 and the 75th percentile is $75,860. The 10th-to-90th percentile spread is $38,460 to $81,890.
That statewide median sits close to several Indiana city salaries, but it should not be treated as a universal starting rate. A new Indianapolis applicant enters below it, a South Bend Firefighter 1st Class is above it, and experienced suburban lateral hires can be well above it.
Indiana also shows large geographic differences. BLS-based 2025 data put the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro — which includes part of northwest Indiana — at an $82,820 firefighter median, while Central Indiana's nonmetropolitan median is $57,320 and Terre Haute is $54,460.
The old $54,730 BLS figure was removed. This update uses the 2025 federal wage series and keeps it separate from department hiring pay.

Lateral jobs are not the same as entry recruit positions. Plainfield, Westfield and Noblesville ranges can require prior full-time fire-service experience and should not be used as statewide “starting firefighter salary” numbers.
Indianapolis Fire Department Salary: What the Latest Hiring Cycle Actually Paid
Indianapolis Fire Department's latest entry-level recruitment listed $55,841 annually, or $26.85 per hour on the City's job bulletin. The application window ran from October 20, 2025 through January 30, 2026.
The position is a full-time career firefighter role and requires firefighters to maintain Indiana First-Class Firefighter or equivalent certification and Indiana EMT certification once in the covered position.
Older Indianapolis class-specification pages still show lower salary values, including a $54,215 annual class figure. For a 2026 applicant, the hiring bulletin that actually closed in January 2026 is the better reference.
Indianapolis search answer: the cleanest current entry figure from the latest IFD hiring cycle is $55,841. Do not mix that with promotional, specialty or later-step compensation.
South Bend Firefighter Salary in 2026
South Bend is unusually transparent because the Common Council adopts a firefighter salary ordinance for the calendar year. The 2026 ordinance lists:

The same ordinance authorizes a 2026 city-residency incentive of up to $2,500 for qualifying sworn employees who establish and maintain residence inside South Bend city limits.
South Bend also uses EMS specialty compensation for qualifying assignments. The important point is that specialty pay is separate from the Firefighter 1st Class base and should not be quietly rolled into a generic “typical salary.”
The department's current recruitment page says applications are closed as of this update. SBFD employs 256 full-time firefighters and staffs 11 engine companies, four ladder companies, a rescue unit and seven ALS ambulances.
Fort Wayne: A New 2026 Contract but an Old Salary Web Page
Fort Wayne is exactly the kind of department where a programmatic salary page can go wrong.
In May 2026, the City Council passed Ordinance S-62-26, establishing compensation for Fort Wayne firefighters represented by IAFF Local 124 for 2025-2026. The agreement followed arbitration over a sick-leave issue; the City said wages and other benefits had already been resolved by agreement.
However, Fort Wayne Fire Department's public “Salary and Benefits” page still displays a schedule marked effective 1/2022, including $56,214.30 recruit/probationary pay and a $66,134.47 journeyman figure.
Those 2022 numbers are not presented here as 2026 salary. A new compensation ordinance exists, but the public-facing salary page has not caught up. Until the City posts the current step table cleanly, the responsible answer is to point applicants to the current contract/hiring process rather than manufacture a 2026 number.
This is also why scraped salary sites are not used for Fort Wayne in this guide. The City and union documents are authoritative even when they are less convenient.
Evansville Firefighter Salary: Latest Detailed Public Schedule Is 2025
Evansville Fire Department's employment page currently shows a salary-and-benefits section labeled 2025:
- 1st Year Probationary Firefighter: $64,434
- 2nd Year Firefighter: $67,434
- 5th Year Firefighter: $72,178
The department uses 24-hour shifts and participates in the state pension system. Because the salary block is explicitly dated 2025, this article keeps that date attached instead of simply changing the heading to 2026.
For an applicant in 2026, the next Evansville merit-process announcement or updated City salary page should be used to confirm whether those figures have changed.
Suburban Indiana: Plainfield, Westfield and Noblesville Pay More — but Read the Job Title
Some of the strongest current Indiana fire pay figures are in fast-growing suburban departments, but the 2026 postings found for this update are primarily lateral recruitments.
Plainfield Fire Territory
Plainfield's August 2026 Probationary Firefighter EMT/EMT-P Lateral posting lists $73,000 to $87,500 annually. Because it is a lateral process, a brand-new applicant should not assume $87,500 is an entry-academy salary.
Westfield Fire Department
Westfield's April 2026 lateral firefighter recruitment lists $77,350 to $91,000 annually. The classification is FLSA non-exempt and intended for experienced applicants.
Noblesville Fire Department
Noblesville's May 2026 lateral Firefighter/EMT process lists $62,375 to $83,224 annually.
Together, these postings show why “Indiana firefighter salary” is increasingly a local-market question. Hamilton and Hendricks County departments can publish salary ranges well above older statewide entry estimates, but qualifications and lateral placement matter.
EMT and Paramedic Requirements Can Change the Comparison
Indiana departments do not all hire the same EMS profile.
- Indianapolis: career firefighters maintain EMT certification and can move into paramedic and specialty roles.
- South Bend: the department operates seven ALS ambulances and publishes separate paramedic-related classifications and specialty compensation.
- Plainfield: the 2026 lateral posting is explicitly Firefighter EMT/EMT-P.
- Noblesville: the 2026 lateral process is Firefighter/EMT.
- Fort Wayne: current hiring materials emphasize EMS qualifications, but the public salary page is stale and should not be used to price paramedic pay in 2026.
That makes a blanket “paramedic adds $X in Indiana” number unreliable. In one city it may be a separate classification; in another it can be specialty pay, assignment pay or a hiring requirement.
Indiana Firefighter Overtime: Why “Indianapolis Has the Most OT” Is Not a Salary Fact
The old version of this page claimed Indianapolis had the most consistent overtime in the state and suggested a generic total-compensation range. Those claims are gone.
Overtime depends on staffing, vacancies, 24-hour schedules, FLSA calculations, callbacks, special events and individual availability. Indianapolis 500 staffing may create operational demand, but that does not justify turning race-week staffing into an annual overtime estimate for every firefighter.
Fort Wayne is a useful reminder that overtime rules are contractual: a 2026 federal settlement involved how certain forms of remuneration were included in firefighters' regular rate for FLSA overtime calculations. That is a payroll-rule issue, not evidence that every Fort Wayne firefighter earns the same overtime amount.
When comparing departments, ask:
- Is scheduled/FLSA overtime already included in the annual number?
- What is the 24-hour shift cycle?
- How are callback and holdover hours calculated?
- Does specialty or paramedic pay affect the overtime rate?
- Which types of compensation count toward the pension base?
Indiana's 1977 Fund: The Firefighter Contribution Is 6%, Not the Employer Rate
Indiana's main public-safety retirement system is the 1977 Police Officers' and Firefighters' Pension and Disability Fund, administered by INPRS.
INPRS says full-time firefighters hired or rehired after April 30, 1977 can be members when their employer participates and the statutory requirements are met. State law changes have also required many newly hired full-time firefighters to transition into the 1977 Fund after the required baseline physical and local-board mental examinations.
The most important paycheck number is straightforward: members contribute 6% of base salary. The employer may choose to pick up all or part of that member contribution.
The 2026 employer contribution rate is 23.30%. That number should not be shown as if 23.30% comes out of the firefighter's paycheck. INPRS has already approved a 26.50% employer rate for 2027.
Take-home rule: start with the 6% statutory member contribution unless the hiring employer says it picks up part or all of it. Keep the 23.30% employer rate out of the employee-deduction calculation.
Indiana Income Tax: State Rate Plus County Tax
Indiana's individual adjusted gross income tax rate is 2.95% for 2026. The state rate is only part of the take-home picture.
Indiana also has county income taxes, and those rates can change. That means two firefighters with the same gross salary can have different Indiana/local withholding depending on where they live and work.
This matters when comparing Indianapolis/Marion County with Allen County, St. Joseph County, Vanderburgh County or suburban Hamilton/Hendricks County jobs. A salary page that says “Indiana tax is 2.95%” and stops there is incomplete.
A Better Way to Estimate Indiana Firefighter Take-Home Pay
Instead of guessing a statewide net salary:
- Use the current recruit, probationary or first-step salary from that employer.
- Check whether the posting is entry-level or lateral.
- Keep EMS/specialty pay separate unless it is built into the published salary.
- Confirm scheduled and FLSA overtime treatment.
- Subtract the actual 1977 Fund member contribution or other applicable retirement deduction.
- Apply the 2.95% Indiana state rate plus the applicable county income tax.
- Add health insurance, union dues and voluntary deferred compensation.
- Then compare housing and commute costs in that specific market.
That method produces a more realistic comparison than saying an Indiana firefighter “typically takes home” a fixed amount after overtime.
