The table deliberately mixes current and clearly dated older figures only when the date is visible. A salary without a reliable effective date is not upgraded to “2026” by assumption.
Wheeling Firefighter Salary: EMT and Paramedic Credentials Have Published Dollar Value
Wheeling Fire Department's current employment page provides one of the cleanest salary examples in West Virginia:

That means the public salary difference from base to EMT is $4,350. Moving from the published EMT figure to the EMT-plus-paramedic figure adds another $8,325.
Wheeling is therefore a better real-world answer to “How much more does a West Virginia firefighter paramedic make?” than a statewide percentage estimate. In this department, the certification value is printed directly on the City's own employment page.
Wheeling also links applicants directly to its MPFRS retirement information, making the salary and pension pieces easier to compare than in cities where old local pension funds remain alongside newer statewide coverage.
Morgantown Firefighter Salary and a Pension Transition Applicants Should Notice
Morgantown's current Firefighter Application form lists:
- Probationary Firefighter: $49,000 annually
- Firefighter First Class: $53,376 annually
The City's FY2026 budget adds useful context. It provided a 2.7% cost-of-living adjustment plus the applicable step increase and added a new Firefighter position to the General Fund.
The same budget documents an important retirement change: on January 7, 2025, City Council approved closing Morgantown's Police and Fire Pension Funds to new entrants effective July 1, 2025.
New Morgantown applicants should ask HR which retirement system applies to their hire date. The old local fire pension remains relevant to existing members, but the City explicitly closed it to new entrants. This page does not assume a replacement plan without an employer-specific enrollment confirmation.
Charleston Firefighter Salary: Do Not Turn the 2025 Recruit Table Into a Fake 2026 Rate
Charleston Fire Department's latest detailed recruit page is for the 2025 Firefighter Recruit process. It lists recruit-stage hourly pay by EMS credential:

- EMT-A: $21.49/hour

It also gives an “Annual Salary After Academy” figure:
- EMT-B: $52,000
- EMT-A: $54,000
- Paramedic: $57,000
Charleston explicitly notes that those annual amounts are based on the wage/progression scale, ambulance-ride incentive and holiday pay. In other words, the $52,000–$57,000 line is not simply a naked base-pay table.
There has been a later compensation change. Charleston's adopted FY2027 budget provides a $1,040 pay increase for all City employees and continues police/fire recruitment incentives.
But this article does not simply add $1,040 to the 2025 recruit table and call the result “Charleston 2026 firefighter salary.” The budget-wide raise and the old recruit compensation table are different source documents. Until a new recruit or union step table is published, the dates stay visible.
Fairmont Firefighter Salary: A Three-Year Apprenticeship Changes the Career Ladder
Fairmont is currently recruiting career firefighters and uses a structure that is different from the simple probation-to-firefighter model in many cities.

The department says every new firefighter is required to complete a three-year U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. That makes the Apprenticeship I and II steps meaningful career stages, not arbitrary salary labels.
Fairmont ran a new firefighter testing process in February 2026, but the City pay document still reflects the July 2025 effective schedule. The pay-plan date is therefore preserved rather than silently pushed forward one year.
Huntington Firefighter Salary: The Number Is Visible, the Effective Date Is Not
Huntington Fire Department's recruitment microsite currently displays a $40,894 starting salary and highlights paid overtime, longevity pay, vacation and holiday time.
The problem is that the page does not show an effective date beside the salary. Search systems can keep a live recruitment page indexed for years even when a salary line has not been refreshed.
Huntington's FY2026 City budget proves that fire compensation is more complicated than that one number: the department budget includes regular firefighter pay, scheduled overtime across sworn classifications, a separate $650,000 unscheduled-overtime budget, holiday pay and vacation/holiday buyback lines.
That does not mean an individual Huntington firefighter receives a predictable share of those overtime dollars. It means the old claim that Huntington or West Virginia generally has “limited overtime” is too simplistic. Department budgets and individual earnings are different things.
EMT and Paramedic Pay in West Virginia Is Department-Specific
Three current or recent city sources show why a statewide paramedic premium would be misleading:

- Are holiday hours paid in cash, leave or included in the published annual amount?
- How are callbacks and holdovers handled?
- Does EMT/paramedic pay count toward the overtime rate?
- Is overtime included in pensionable compensation under that employee's retirement system?
Major industrial or chemical incidents along the Kanawha and Ohio River corridors can require extended operations, but incident exposure is not a guaranteed annual income stream.

Why city and hire date still matter
Charleston's most recent audited financial statements show that its legacy Firemen's Pension and Relief Fund covers full-time fire employees hired before June 1, 2011; newer eligible employees moved into the statewide MPFRS structure.
Fairmont's current personnel rules say firefighters hired on or before December 31, 2017 remain in the Fairmont Fire Pension and Relief Fund, while covered firefighters hired on or after January 1, 2018 participate in MPFRS.
Morgantown made another transition in 2025 by closing its local Police and Fire Pension Funds to new entrants effective July 1, 2025.
Practical pension question: ask HR for the retirement plan tied to your exact hire date. “West Virginia firefighters pay 8.5%” is only correct when the job is actually covered by MPFRS.
West Virginia Cut Income Tax Rates Again for 2026
West Virginia enacted another across-the-board personal income-tax reduction during the 2026 legislative session. The change is retroactive to January 1, 2026.
