A single “Illinois firefighter salary” number hides the most important part of the story. Chicago and its suburbs pay on a very different scale from many downstate departments, and paramedic requirements can move starting compensation by tens of thousands of dollars.
That is why this page does not use the old entry/mid-career/top-step template. Illinois Firefighter Pay: Chicago Metro vs. the Rest of the State
The latest federal 2025 wage data put the Illinois firefighter median at $78,380 per year. The statewide 10th percentile is $38,900 and the 90th percentile is $106,060.
The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro is higher: the firefighter median is $82,820, with the 75th percentile at $105,720 and the 90th percentile at $112,930. Peoria's 2025 metro median is $73,670, while southern Illinois outside the major metros is substantially lower at $47,970.
Those figures explain the broad geography, but they are not hiring rates. A person applying to Naperville needs the Naperville contract number; someone applying to Rockford needs the Rockford job posting. The department figures below are more useful for an actual career decision.
Why the old $67,280 BLS figure was removed: the current 2025 federal wage series puts the Illinois median at $78,380. More importantly, a statewide statistic should not be presented beside department salary estimates as if they were the same type of data.

A Firefighter/Paramedic posting is not directly comparable with a basic Firefighter/EMT opening. Illinois departments often require paramedic licensing at hire or build it into the position title, which is one reason suburban salaries can look much higher.
Chicago Fire Department Salary in 2026
Chicago Fire Department's current job-requirements information lists $74,626 per year as the starting salary for both Firefighter/EMT and Fire Paramedic, effective January 1, 2026.
That figure is a starting point, not the salary ceiling for a Chicago firefighter. The City's current employee-salary data, updated in September 2026, show many incumbent Firefighter-EMT base salaries around $112,326 to $126,384, with some records above that level. Those are published base salaries for existing employees; they are not overtime totals and they are not guaranteed steps for a new hire.
The City's appropriation documents also show separate firefighter classifications and pay rates for EMT, paramedic, engineer, lieutenant and captain positions. That is why the old shorthand “Chicago $76K–$110K” was too crude: it mixed entry pay, later steps and different classifications without saying which was which.
Do not use an incumbent CFD salary as a starting offer. For a new applicant, $74,626 is the current published starting figure. Later base pay depends on rank, grade, labor agreement and career progression.
Chicago firefighter pension deduction
Chicago firefighters participate in the Firemen's Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago, not the Article 4 system used by many suburban and downstate municipalities.
The Fund says active participants currently contribute a total of 9 1/8% (9.125%) of pensionable salary. The contribution is divided among firefighter annuity, spouse annuity, annuity increment and ordinary disability components.
The Fund also states that pensionable salary generally does not include overtime and most other pay additions, although duty-availability pay and certain specified compensation can be pensionable under the statute.
Naperville Firefighter/Paramedic Salary in 2026
Naperville is one of the clearest examples of the suburban Illinois firefighter/paramedic pay model. Its April 2026 recruitment lists $85,257 annually for Firefighter/Paramedic.
The City and Naperville Professional Firefighters agreed to a new labor contract in 2025. Under the current structure, a firefighter/paramedic with five or more years of qualifying experience, Advanced Technician Firefighter certification and successful completion of Naperville's 12-month probation can move to Step 5 at $106,841.67.
That accelerated placement is not available to every new hire. It is an experience-and-certification rule, so the $106,841.67 number should not appear in a generic “starting salary” field.
Springfield Firefighter Salary: A Three-Year Probationary Ladder
Springfield's current firefighter recruitment information uses a progression that is quite different from Chicago or Naperville:

The City's 2026 entry information packet says those figures are based on the March 1, 2025 contract and also lists overtime pay, longevity pay, holidays, medical insurance, compensatory time and the statutory fire pension as benefits.
Because the packet itself is the current 2026 recruitment document, the pay ladder is useful now even though the underlying contract effective date is stated as March 2025.
Rockford Firefighter/Paramedic Salary in 2026
Rockford's June 2026 full-time Firefighter/Paramedic recruitment lists $29.71 per hour, or $61,787.58 annually.
The position is explicitly a Firefighter/Paramedic job, not a basic firefighter-only class. That distinction matters when comparing Rockford with Springfield's probationary firefighter rate or Chicago's Firefighter/EMT starting figure.
The public posting does not provide a credible “typical overtime earnings” figure, so this page does not add one.
Elgin Firefighter/Paramedic Salary
Elgin's Firefighter/Paramedic recruitment that ran from November 2025 through January 5, 2026 listed $83,462 to $111,241 annually.
The department has roughly 145 sworn firefighters and staffs engines, ladder companies and paramedic units. Because paramedic licensure is part of the classification, Elgin belongs in the suburban firefighter/paramedic comparison rather than a generic Illinois entry-firefighter table.
DeKalb Firefighter/Paramedic Salary in 2026
DeKalb currently publishes one of the clearest 2026 salary ranges in the state: $80,715 to $114,683 for Firefighter/Paramedic, with the starting salary effective January 1, 2026.
The position requires a State of Illinois or National Registry paramedic credential by conditional offer, along with CPAT and Ladder Climb certification requirements.
DeKalb also lists education bonus, longevity pay, Kelly days, a fire pension and a deferred-compensation match among its benefits. Those benefits should be evaluated separately from base salary rather than rolled into a vague “total compensation” estimate.
Aurora Firefighter Salary: Why the Date Matters
Aurora currently has a Fire Private eligibility list effective March 21, 2026 through March 21, 2028. However, the detailed salary schedule published on the department's Fire Private page is still labeled 2025 Salary Schedule.
That table lists:
- Starting: $72,699.12
- 6 months: $98,640.90
- 1 year: $102,394.95
- 3 years: $110,265.51
- 5 years: $118,783.32
Those are unusually large jumps, which is exactly why the original source and year need to stay attached to the numbers. Until Aurora publishes a clearly labeled 2026 wage table, this page keeps them as the latest published 2025 schedule rather than adding an assumed raise.
Why Paramedic Status Changes the Illinois Salary Conversation
Illinois has many departments where “firefighter” hiring is effectively firefighter/paramedic hiring. Naperville, Rockford, Elgin and DeKalb are current examples.
That produces two common SEO mistakes:
- A high Firefighter/Paramedic salary gets quoted as the statewide entry firefighter salary.
- A basic firefighter or probationary-firefighter rate gets compared with a fully licensed suburban paramedic position.
A better comparison asks whether the job requires a paramedic license on day one, during probation, or not at all. Certification can be part of the base classification rather than a simple annual “bonus.”
Illinois Firefighter Overtime: Why Payroll Headlines Can Mislead
The previous version claimed Chicago firefighters regularly earn $130,000–$160,000+ with overtime. Individual employees can certainly earn substantial overtime, but that is not a safe “typical firefighter” estimate without employee-level payroll analysis.
Chicago's budget separately funds overtime, holiday premium pay, duty availability, specialty pay and uniform allowance. Springfield lists overtime and compensatory time in its benefits. Other departments handle staffing and FLSA compensation through their own contracts.
The useful question is not “How much OT do Illinois firefighters get?” but:
- Is overtime built into the published annual figure or paid separately?
- How does the department's 24-hour schedule interact with FLSA?
- Are callbacks, holdovers and minimum staffing paid at the same rate?
- Is paramedic pay part of base salary or a separate premium?
- Does overtime count as pensionable salary under that pension system?
For Chicago specifically, the Firemen's Annuity and Benefit Fund says overtime generally is not included in pensionable salary. That matters when comparing a large overtime year with long-term pension value.
Illinois Firefighter Pensions: Chicago Is a Separate System
The old article referred to an “Illinois Municipal Firefighters Pension Fund.” That name is misleading.
Illinois has multiple firefighter pension structures. Chicago firefighters are covered by the Firemen's Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago under Article 6 of the Illinois Pension Code. Many firefighters in municipalities outside Chicago are covered by local Article 4 firefighter pension funds.

Illinois pension law also distinguishes Tier 1 and Tier 2 members by hire date and benefit rules. For Chicago, Tier 2 generally applies to firefighters first entering service on or after January 1, 2011. The Chicago fund published a Tier 2 pensionable salary cap of $145,649.97 effective July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.
Practical point: do not judge an Illinois fire department's pension from statewide headlines alone.
