Broad Fire Closes I-84 in Weber Canyon, Utah on Labor Day Weekend

A fast-moving grass and brush fire shut down one of Utah's busiest interstate corridors on one of the year's heaviest travel weekends. Here's what's known so far about the Broad Fire in Weber Canyon.

What Happened

The South Weber Fire Department responded to a report of an active grass fire near the mouth of Weber Canyon on Saturday afternoon, September 5. The fire, named the Broad Fire, started along Interstate 84 near mile marker 89 and quickly jumped the highway, burning on both the north and south sides of the road. Initial size estimates started around 4.5 acres and grew rapidly to 30 acres within the first hour, eventually reaching approximately 125 acres by Saturday night. The cause remains under investigation.

Current Status

Firefighters remained on scene overnight into Sunday to continue working the fire, as it was still considered an active incident. Officials asked the public not to call in to report the fire further, since crews were already engaged.

I-84 Road Closure and Traffic Impact

Interstate 84 was fully closed in both directions through Weber Canyon Saturday afternoon as flames burned on both sides of the roadway, backing up long lines of trucks and travelers on one of the busiest weekends of the year. By Saturday night, the Utah Department of Transportation reopened one lane in each direction, though officials asked drivers to proceed slowly without stopping or pulling over, since active flames remained visible near the roadway. Drivers heading through the canyon should expect delays and check UDOT traffic conditions before traveling.

Firefighting Response

The South Weber Fire Department led the initial response, with the U.S. Forest Service also involved given the fire's spread onto forested terrain north of the highway. Both ground and aerial firefighting resources responded, including air tanker retardant drops on the steep terrain above the canyon. U.S. Forest Service Public Information Officer Sierra Hellstrom said forward progression was largely stopped on the south, Davis County side of the highway by Saturday evening, while the fire continued moving north and northeast up the slope on the National Forest side.

A Busy Month for Weber Canyon Fires

The Broad Fire is the second notable fire at the mouth of Weber Canyon in less than a month. In mid-August, the Dugway Fire burned roughly 30 acres in the same general area, closing part of US-89 and briefly threatening structures before being fully contained. The much larger Rocky Canyon Fire, which started along I-84 south of Morgan in early August, had burned over 16,000 acres and was around 85% contained as of the most recent figures reviewed. Statewide, Utah has recorded well over 800 fires in 2026, burning several hundred thousand acres combined.
